Jan. 30th, 2014 04:25 pm Scribal Experiment - oh my

So I got sick of everyone saying "I'd do scribal, but I only like doing the drawing and painting" or "I'd do scribal but I can't draw, calligraphy is fun though" so I came up with a project to combine the two together. Making little pamphlets to be given out to newcomers, one person does the calligrapher, one does the Illumination. We all work harder when our creations have a purpose right?

I posted my proposal and a date to have people come over and work on them and have had a lot more responses than I thought I would. I don't know if I'm bouncy happy or scared I don't have enough room! Good thing I have extra tables, that and weekends sometimes eat peoples plans.

Eep!

Nov. 6th, 2013 10:30 am Bubble Bubble toil and trouble!!

Moo ha ha!

Plots and planning are coming together well for this weekend. I have balloons, I have feathers, I have music, I have photos, I have Angel food cake and a plan to buy bean salad! Now all I need is wings for my costume and I'm set. Who knew they put halloween costumes away so fast?

I also found the softest fluffiest white carpet ever and I'm so tempted to get it so we can sit on a "Cloud" but the $300 price tag is holding me back on this one because I couldn't leave it in the living room afterwards as there would be no room for it. And how does one keep a white 2" fluffy carpet clean?!? But it was so soft...

Right, more working less playing!
toodles!

Sep. 26th, 2013 01:06 pm Enough with the allergies already

Woke up having breathing problems at 5am this morning. I think I might be allergic to something on my pillow. Perhaps I didn't shower enough after the Harvest feast grain dust waves and got some on my pillow. Perhaps a cat hair blew in through the window and landed on my pillow. Perhaps there is silicon in the memory foam pillow and it's old enough that it is breaking down and I'm breathing it in. (My optomitrist thinks I'm allergic to silicon - no knee replacements for me!)

The bedroom is getting the purge tonight and I might go out and buy me a new pillow just in case.

Or I could be getting sick. I'm tired of building up my stomach mussles, I'd like to breath easy again for a week please.

Jun. 21st, 2013 12:59 pm Calgary is Flooding

And since I live and work up on the hill, it is all going by below me and I get to go to work.
My heart goes out to those who live down there. Our spare beds are already being taken by my roommate's displaced family. I'm hoping hard right now that no one will need the couch.

Eep!

Feb. 27th, 2013 11:20 am Epic Dream

I was a hero, I had saved the world from the last appocolipse and I was well into my first death. I had served my Elven people as their leader until I saw the shadow that told me I should enter my first death. It wasn't a good time to leave as the signs of the next appocolipse cycle had been seen in the birds and on the land but death is never convenient. I went to the cabin in the valley and joined my husband who had entered his first death decades ago and enjoyed the isolation.
Like many things in my life, my first death wasn't going according to custom. My sister was going across the Ocean and could not take her daughter for she had forseen her final death there and it wasn't her daughter's fate. Family ties cannot be denighed and we took in the child who would now be forever tainted by being raised by the dead.
The appocolipse was also coming and death was not stopping my people from indicating it was my fate to stop it again. My husband, although he was younger than I, was very near his second death and I could not stand to be parted from him. Although I had to go on the quest, he could not go with me so I asked him to rush his second death. The green and gold embroidered silk pouch had been finished and with the grace and generosity I had loved him for turned into a ball of yarn.
As I mourned over my husband's second death a human woman from the closest town came buy to visit. She had played with my niece when she was a child and had never respected the boundaries of my death. Her name was Wilma and she was old for a human, with an energy and vitality that would never allow her to have a first death. She wanted to come with me on my quest but my efforts to disuade her brought to my attention something that doomed our world. The Golden bell in the ruined city that had to be wrung to avert the appocolipse had been discovered by humans and had been destroyed, melted down for its gold.

And then I woke up.
And yes, the Wilma in question was Baroness Wilma with a lot more silver in her hair.

Oct. 10th, 2012 02:57 pm Dreams

What is it about the dark days of fall making you dream? Is it the extra dark in the morning while I'm sleeping giving that extra viewing space? This last week with the cool moving in I've been waking up from some epic dreams. I think I was hearding Dinosaurs this morning, but I can't remember any more other than I managed to go back to it the first 3 times I hit snooze.

I have been feeling greatly creative recently. It is amazing how procastinating on a big project (40 Charters - which I'm getting a great amount of help with) makes me get other things done. I can't put off working on those for just anything you see, it has to be something else that *needs* doing. Like cleaning the kitchen, or working on my Saimhain spider dress, or working on the Scroll due at Saimhain, or working on the Steampunk corset, or designing gadgets for the party, or scrubbing the kitchen. Worthy things, not things like finishing a video game or reading a book (though I've done that too - it isn't crunch time yet!)

Toodles!

Aug. 31st, 2012 09:08 am Sweet Dreams are made with Wood

So on date night we finally got out to watch Brave. It was cute, it made me cry, it reminded me of people I know, and abused a lot of great fabric which would have been very hard to make in that age. (Sometimes a little knowledge can make you whimper when the rest of the theatre is laughing.)
So in the story the magic is made by a witch who is posing as a wood carver with a thing for carving bears. There were some really cool animated carvings in that movie and they went straight into my dreams.
I dreamed that a lady Musician from Borealis was a woodcarver and she made the most amazing carved musical instruments. The harps! The gitterns! She was amazingly talented at it. (I have no idea if she carves in real life but I wouldn't be surprised!) I had commissioned her to make Catcetra a Hurdy-Gurdy as a present but she had never made one before so most of the dream was the quests to find blueprints and the wood and debating what to carve into it.
Isn't it interesting what the dreams pick up from your life?

Aug. 17th, 2012 10:10 am Donuts!

We have two boxes of donuts here at work today and half of the office is away! I may have to throw myself on those Boston Cream bombs for the good of the rest of the office. It's a hard job, but I am woman enough for it. ;)

What should I say? Now that Quad is over and done with and I have no projects on the go I am gleefully reading through the books I've been buying and hoarding up until I had time. Yesterday's romance was "Mr. Perfect" by Linda Howard which had the new neighbors not standing each other until they get to know each other. Smart comments and gleeful insults abounded, made me giggle most of my way through the murder mystery aspect. The main character was trying to cut down on her swearing by paying a quarter per swear to each of her friends who caught her at it, she wasn't going to have much of her paycheck by the end of most days! It amused me enough that I didn't going out and do the shopping I should have last night. Tonight I will have to go.

I've got 4 ideas in the wind for new outfits for the SCA.
1, I have a lovely cut and uncut velvet I died http://www.flickr.com/photos/f_jean/7179155543/in/set-72157629671788967 that I want to make a dress and doublet out of.
2, I want to make the spiderweb dress from a portrait I remember seeing when I was first researching garb in the SCA but I CAN'T FIND THE PORTRAIT! Arg! Grr.... whimper I would really like to have the documentation for it and have it done for Samhain, because that would just be so appropriate!
3, I'd like to make a front lacing dress for camping, lightweight for warm days. I think the fabric I bought for this project is going to end up being the fabric in the Samhain dress.
4, Another Blackworked chemise, because it feels strange to sit down to play a video game or watch television without one in my hands!

Right. Now that I've typed out the Donut high maybe I can go back to sorting papers at work.
Toodles!

Jul. 30th, 2012 09:42 am Getting Sick is not helping

Why did I have to get sick this weekend? I'm whiny when I'm sick and it doesn't help me get stuff done when all I want to do is get my sinuses to stop trying to exit my head by my ears or nose.

Arg.

So the list:

1, Finish the Blackwork for Bjar's shirt. It's kinda crunch time.

Done, this doesn't take much brainwork.

2, Paint charters and make an original Scroll for Quad.

Not done - I got the Calligraphy done on the Original but ended up just stairing at the part where I needed to draw the Illumination to paint and then stairing some more. My creativity was gleefully out playing in the garden somewhere I think. The Charter I'd already drawn got painted but the one that needed me to draw on it still remains to be done. I'm feeling more in touch today so hopefully tonight!

3, Bake cookies for Bjar's vigil.

Too hot. Or was that fever? Don't know. I've got 2 dozen cookies from my first batch but I'm still hoping to make more this week.

4, Continue praying that the fabric I ordered actually makes it to my house tonight. According to their website it is in Calgary!

They didn't deliver it because there was no one home to pay a "Brokerage fee" which I knew might happen but still - arg! On the plus side I wasn't trying to also sew a dress this weekend while my ability to think was stuffed with cotton balls.

5, Help Bjar finish his shirt with ordered fabric.

Yup. Not done.

6, Make me new Garb for Quad? Maybe?

Maybe I'll have some time for some underwear...

7, Mundane stuff like Banking, shopping etc.

Nope - didn't want to infect anyone while in the dripping nose phase.

Now I just really want to get the cold done before Quad War!

Jul. 27th, 2012 11:28 am To do before Quad

The list so I won't miss anything. Gotta love work as a breather from commitments at home!

1, Finish the Blackwork for Bjar's shirt. It's kinda crunch time.

2, Paint charters and make an original Scroll for Quad.

3, Bake cookies for Bjar's vigil. So glad we have an idea of what to do for this now. Why don't they have a guidline for what to do when someone in your family is put on vigil? (Probably because we are a group of individuals who like to try different things. Eventually we found what we shouldn't do to avoid stepping on toes!)

4, Continue praying that the fabric I ordered actually makes it to my house tonight. According to their website it is in Calgary!

5, Help Bjar finish his shirt with ordered fabric.

6, Make me new Garb for Quad? Maybe? It would be nice to have something other than my Chiton for hot weather and if the fabric comes I'll have 5 metres of a Purple Linen/Cotton blend that I really hope is the color it was in the photo. (Which will mean I'll have to take the fabric down from the ceiling...)

7, Mundane stuff like Banking, shopping etc.

8, Make a list of what to Pack for Quad War that isn't the usual, already included:
a, Table for cookies/Root Beer Floats
b, Firepit

Okay this doesn't look as scary as it's been feeling. I can do this.
